Psychotherapy in Canada

In Canada, many health professionals can provide psychotherapy and distinctions between titles are listed below to assist the search for suitable support. For tax purposes, therapy is recognized as a medical expense when prescribed by a medical doctor and provided by a CRA-approved practitioner which includes professionals in Ontario with the title Registered Psychotherapist (RP).

Psychiatrists: Medical doctors who diagnose mental health disorders and prescribe medication, whose services are typically covered by provincial healthcare services. Access generally comes through referrals from family physicians and there can be significant wait times.

Psychologists: University graduates who have a doctoral degree in Psychology with appointments often focused on assessments or psychometric testing for diagnoses.

Psychotherapists: Masters’ degree in Psychotherapy or Counselling graduates who are trained to support individuals, couples or groups through a wide range of experiences by considering thoughts, feelings and behaviours for better understanding and navigation.

Social workers: Social Work degree graduates who focus on systemic and community factors that contribute to well being, usually accessed through public healthcare sites such as hospitals or through coverage available under extended health care plans.

Psychotherapists are regulated at the provincial level but not all provinces have regulation. Recognized titles for Psychotherapists are below, in alphabetical order by province with links to each of the five colleges that oversee professional standards and regulations to protect the public.

Licensed Counselling Therapist – College of Licensed Counselling Therapists of New Brunswick (CCTNB)

Registered Counselling Therapist – Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists (NSCCT)

Psychotherapists who are registered with a provincial regulatory college are generally permitted to work online with patients across all other provinces, with some limitations. Psychotherapists who do not belong to one of these regulatory colleges are required to take additional steps before working online with patients across provinces.

My training in the UK and accreditation in Canada allows me to work across all provinces and almost all countries globally, except in specific jurisdictions where separate licensing is required.
